Maintaining two capsule wardrobes seem to be taking a toll mentally. I periodically bring up this topic about what to do with my clothes during this new normal state. Here is the reality. It’s late August and I went into the office one time in five and a half months. I probably wore a dress less than 6 times in total these past five and a half months. Each time I open up my closet to get a pair of sneakers I am faced with the question “Do I need to keep all of this?” Before I go any further let me clarify “all of this.” I own the following in addition to clothes for working out:
Warm Weather Capsule Wardrobe:
- 18 warm weather dresses
- 2 skirts
- 3 short sleeve shirts
- 2 pairs of jeans
- 1 denim jacket
Cold Weather Capsule Wardrobe:
- 14 cold weather dresses
- 2 sweaters
- 5 long sleeve shirts
- 3 jackets
- 1 business suit
Shoes:
- 3 pairs of flip flops
- 2 pairs of toms
- 2 pairs of black ballet flats
- 4 pairs of sneakers (running, old running for lifting, dog walking, and back up running)
- 2 pairs of dressy healed shoes
I know there are people out there with more than I have as well as less than I have. I am just trying to figure out what is enough in this new normal. It’s very hard for me to look at things that I haven’t used in a very long time and say “let’s keep that thing just a little bit longer” or “maybe I will wear it someday.” I’m the person that only keeps things that I use, that I find to be of value, and that have joy sparking memories.
I am going to try to consolidate my two capsule wardrobes into a very simplified single wardrobe. Let’s see how that feels. I’m sure if it doesn’t work that I will certainly write about this again.
Consolidated Capsule Wardrobe:
- 5 cold weather dresses
- 9 warm weather dresses
- 3 long sleeve shirts
- 2 pairs of jeans
- 3 short sleeve shirts
- 2 skirts
- 1 denim jacket
- shoes remain the same as above
the month i stopped working, i donated 95% of my “work clothes.” i kept a few items in case i need to look nice if going out. since i no longer need to work, my clothes fit my now life style, shorts and t-shirts for the summer and jeans and long sleeved t-shirts for the winter. lol once a year i go through my clothes and donate any i have not worn in a year or are just not useful to me any longer. since i have a small number of clothes to wear, i am wearing them once every week or so, so they tend to need to be replaced at least yearly if not sooner. socks seem to wear out the fastest. lol
