Decluttering During Quarantine

Two years ago I KonMari‘d my things before it was cool. Yet I am still finding things that do not spark joy or get much use. During our state shut down or when the rules of engagement continue to change or when I just don’t feel like driving to the donation center, I needed to find a way to declutter and complete that cycle. Decluttering but keeping boxes of stuff piled up does not mean you are done in my opinion. You are not done decluttering until that stuff is out of your home, out of your car, and out of your life.

To complete my declutter cycle I had to get creative. Enter the free box next to our roadside mailbox. If the weather looked nice for the day, I would simply place a FREE add on Craigslist providing my address and a couple of the items within the box. I promised those on Criagslist that I would take the post down once I noticed everything was gone. Just yesterday, I listed a FREE box on Craigslist and it was gone in less than 2 hours. 2 HOURS!!!

Collectively those items had value but individually I did not find the money worth my time. I know. I know. I’m trying to pay off debt and build savings/emergency fund/retirement. But setting up a place to meet along with negotiating a price, I need to be selling something worth more than $25. That’s just my personal threshold. Yours can totally be different. But $25 is the number to get me to do the extra work.

P.S. Before that box goes out the door, I ask Mr. BMM just to take a peak to make sure he is ok with everything. It saves a whole lot of drama by making that one little statement.

How have you gotten creative when you decluttered this year?

  1. Earlier this year, I found a “buy nothing” Facebook group in my community. I have posted a ton of stuff on it. It always amazes me that I get responses within 5 or 10 minutes of posting something. I have a box in my basement that I am going to tackle this weekend!
