If you have been following my blog, you know that I have written a lot about the new normal. Some of you have even commented about your new normal or things that you have observed, things that you like, and other things that you can’t wait to be over. If you are new to my blog, welcome!
Over the past couple of weeks I have written about the new normal. My new normal has been slower, more intentional, and less complicated. My new normal includes grocery pick up because seeing empty shelves triggers old traumas. Having to learn new rules for each store that may change week to week is too much for me. Heck rules about which masks work vs. don’t work, how often to swap masks, and when you should wear a mask has changed too many times to count.
I like things to be as simple as possible. My new normal has me re-purposing time spent getting dressed for the office and commuting with puppy walks. My new normal includes me and Mr. BMM going for extra bike rides and spending more time in nature. My new normal has me pre-cutting all of our veggies the day I pick them up from the grocery store. My new normal has me scheduling less things. My new normal has me switching doctors from far away to closer to home. I am sure your new normal has changed.
Yet I hear some people talk about returning to normal by getting dressed up in a suit and walking into an office. I just want to bang my head against the wall. Wearing a mask 100% while in the office wasn’t part of your pre-pandemic normal, right? Nope. What about having your temperature checked every morning? Nope. Oh and those questions you have to answer about symptoms and where you have been, those weren’t there either before, right? Nope. Does this signal to me that you can’t handle change? YES. Do I think that you probably say “we have always done things this way” at least once a week? YES. Do I wonder lots of other things about you? ABSOLUTELY!
Don’t push your old normal on other people. They might not be ready for it. Your old normal might actually cause anxiety. People have real fears about getting sick. You pre-pandemic normal people failed so many times to keep their staff safe when someone came to work sick, we now question if you can do the right thing now. This pandemic may have caused more trauma to others than you realize. Please stop pushing your new normal or trying to make your old normal fit into this new normal life. You will hurt more people as well as lose amazing friends and co-workers. You will be left scratching your head and saying “but this is how we have always done this” with nobody around you.
