“Think about it. Why would you make something that you’re going to use for a few minutes out of a material that’s basically going to last forever, and you’re just going to throw it away. What’s up with that?”
Jeb Berrier, BagIt movie
Been thinking for a while on how to reduce my recycling and waste.
Want to join me in an attempt to go plastic free in July?
Do you have any tips or tricks that worked for you in eliminating your plastic waste?
Take the Plastic Free July pledge now!
Some things I already do:
- Reusable produce and shopping bags
- Water bottle
- Steel straws
- Cloth napkins (not plastic but still zero waste)
- Unsubscribed to junk mail (snail mail and email)
- Use mason jars and glass containers daily (I just wish the container lids weren’t plastic)
- Borrow books from the library
- Requested that Amazon use the minimal amount of packaging when shipping my orders
What steps have you taken?
I do a few things to reduce plastic use. Then not so long ago I saw a picture that was taken after a marathon. Tons of plastic, one-time use water bottles in piles. TONS. Way now plastic that I probably use in a lifetime. Made me really question if reducing my use was even making a big difference or if encouraging marathons to go plastic free would really be the way to go…

When I race I carry a reusable water bottle. It is made of plastic but I feel it is better than the one time use bottles of water.

A co-worker was telling me she went to a marathon where they required runners to bring their own water bottles. I know it’s harder for some runners but it’s even harder on the environment! If only all marathons would do this…

I wish all races did that actually!
