Minimalism Got me Here: Cleaning an Oven without a Trip to the Store

Who knew that precooked meatballs would leave a greasy mess at the bottom of the oven? And that baking it off the next day would result in my home alarm system dispatching my local fire department at 6am? (If you knew, shhh. I had no clue ☺).

If this happened last year, I would run to Wal-Mart and pick up at least a dozen different oven cleaners to do the job. Struggle for hours and then have a chemical odor in my oven for a week.

I cleaned my oven in less time than a trip to Wal-Mart for probably less than a quarter in cost. Here is what I needed:

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Rag
  • And of course this awesome YouTube video.

Since I of course had the oven warm already, I scrapped off the excess stuff with a plastic spatula first. Then sprinkled in a nice layer of baking soda. Dropped in some water and read a book. About an hour later I wiped it all out and this happened:

I was able to meal prep without a visit from the fire department!
